Re: Other OS Support (Linux, Mac)
We are using CentOS 6.6 / 7 on our Dev team computers.
We use Veeam B&R for servers and we just installed Veeam endpoint on our Win. based computers (with backup to repo.). Linux support will give us a 360 solution and we will be willing to pay for it allot!
Thanks

+1 for Mac OS support.
Currently I have an ad-hoc server set up to receive Time Machine backups, but TM can get so flaky and suddenly decide to not read existing backups that it would be great to have something like Veeam Endpoint to protect my users data.
As for Linux support, all of my RHEL workstations run on the same configuration and all user data is server-based, which is a VM and so covered by B&R. For those people asking for Linux support on Endpoint, do you not have your servers set up in a virtual environment?

I guess there is a hunger/demand for a physical server based product, based on VEB , that supports both Windows/Linux .... now THAT is definitely something worth paying forGostev wrote:But you are talking about servers, not desktops here, right?

Re: Other OS Support (Linux, Mac)
We do not have Linux desktops in a virtual environment for a few reasons. The purpose of these machines is to build code for our firmware that is installed in our hardware products. The resource intensive process to build code and work on it does not suit using a virtual machine. The other issue is the physical connections are an issue. Many products we code or work with will still use telephone modems, serial connections, multiple USB ports, as well as Ethernet. We have found through our own testing that VM's do not handle these other connection types very well. Currently I have a Linux server running BackupPC to backup data off the local workstations, and this works, I just like Veeam better! The main code repository is on a server that is virtualized and is already covered with VBR, but to include the workstations would be great. Right now I have 2 separate repositories for backups, one for Veeam and one for BackupPC. I am sure everyone here can admit that being able to integrated into one solution is ideal!thefold wrote:As for Linux support, all of my RHEL workstations run on the same configuration and all user data is server-based, which is a VM and so covered by B&R. For now, I am finishing testing VEB and have had no real issues, so I am confident we will push that out, and hope that in a future release Linux and Mac's would be covered.

We are a CentOS shop! However, the majority of colocation/managed physical customers I see are Debian or Ubuntu. Sorry for the late reply, I think I need to modify some notification settings.Dima P. wrote:Charley,

Physical managed servers. I see a lot of people out there still concerned that database won't perform on a virtualized platform. Dell R-series, Dell 1xxx and 2xxx series (old, obviously). Basically, I have to manage 80 or so Ahsay accounts to supplement. Ahsay does not scale well for us, and I would like to eliminate it from our product suite altogether.Gostev wrote:Hi, do you really use Linux on your desktops? This is pretty uncommon, so I am not sure if there is a big market in that for us...

Yes, desktop support and server support would be good as well. Currently we are trying to use Bareos, and it seems to work, but Veeam has the bare metal recovery. If we could use Veeam for everything, life would be good!

Daniel, thanks!
By the way, I believe, it should be possible to use Relax and Recover utility for bare metal restores in conjunction with Bareos?Currently we are trying to use Bareos, and it seems to work, but Veeam has the bare metal recovery.

Yes, but the other issue with that is the windows clients that would be used. At this moment, we are still investigating our options.

What if using the Bareos for Linux and Endpoint for Windows?

We use Veeam to backup our cloud platform, however we have a large number of physical servers running CentOS, RHEL, Debian and Ubuntu and it would be nice to have Veeam Endpoint as a backup option for those servers so that we can consolidate on a single backup solution.

Re: Other OS Support (Linux, Mac)
Now, that's a different story. I will not argue Linux-based *servers* have, and will continue to have a huge footprint. All I am saying is that Linux *desktops* are rare... Mac OS has much bigger market share, by far.
But that also opens an interesting conversation. Alan, are you basically saying here that there is no good free backup solution for Linux servers today? Or that they exist - but they are not as comprehensive as our [fairly basic tbh] Veeam Endpoint Backup FREE for Windows? Or the desire to have a single vendor for everything is the main and only driver here?

Re: Other OS Support (Linux, Mac)
we are using Centos 6 and would like to be able to back it up or even interact with lefthand snapshots and the underlying ext4 file system.
Main part is, as you do it with Windows, Snapshots, CBT, WAN Accel to have small backup windows.

Re: Other OS Support (Linux, Mac)
Patrick,
I assume this is about a virtual server? In that case you are on the wrong topic and you should be in the Backup & Replication part. If your server (or even workstation for that matter) is running on VMware or Hyper-V, with a storage beneath such as lefthand, then you can use all the functionality from B&R.
VEB is specifically designed for physical endpoints running windows, and maybe even a few physical servers (but on Windows also)

[MERGED] Feature Request: Backup Linux Clients/Servers
Hello,
We have physical Oracle Cluster and Linux servers in use.
Is there a plan that also Linux OS can be backed up with Veeam Backup Endpoint?
Thanks for the info.

Re: Feature Request: Backup Linux Clients/Servers
Hi Michael,
Never say never with Veeam . We are listening (or better said in this case, reading the forums ) very actively and we have seen this request a few times. Can you tell us what distro(s) you are running? I am not promising anything, but we like to see what the most popular used distro's are out there.
Thanks
Mike

Re: Other OS Support (Linux, Mac)
Hi Michael,
Thanks,
Mind if I ask you some more questions? Out of curiosity... Wondering if the needs for Linux are "comparable" with the needs for Microsoft OS endpoints...
* The Debian servers, what workloads are they running
* What underlying filesystem?).
* If we would offer backup, would you like to see File-level backup, Volume level or Entire Server protection?
* What kind of restore options would you like to see?
* Any other scenario's you would like to see?
Thanks
Mike

Re: Other OS Support (Linux, Mac)
For those of you who are asking for Mac support... Macintosh Time Machine is a solution that has been advised many times by the IT community. Is there something you are missing in that solution and functionality from Veeam Endpoint Backup you want to use?

Re: Other OS Support (Linux, Mac)
Hi Mike,
Please excuse that I answer so late. I did not see your post.
* The Debian servers, what workloads are they running
- The server utilization or the workloads is not high. The servers for example are Monitoringservers….
- On the Oracleserver, the workloads are high.
* What underlying filesystem?
- Ext 2-4, xFS
* If we would offer backup, would you like to see File-level backup, Volume level or Entire Server protection?
* What kind of restore options would you like to see?
- All options if possible . We just want to have an image with which I can recover an entire server. It is sufficient only the system partition.
Thanks
Michael
