Backup to external (via WAN)
Hi@all,
I am currently testing Veeam backup under Linux. I have set up a corresponding test environment.
A backup server (local) that provides a share via NFS and a server (also local) that serves as a test server. On the test server, I installed the agent for Linux and configured and performed a backup to the NFS share.
* External backup
I would like to bring the backup externally to a second location. We have 100/100 MBit and fixed IPs at both locations.
If I see it correctly, "Veeam Backup & Replication" is only available for Windows and not for Linux. Is that correct? However, we have "only" Linux on both sites.
Is there a practicable way to get the backup to external automatically? Which one?
I would appreciate any helpful tips.

Edit: I have removed the question about recovery, as this is done in the programme itself. I am currently testing this.

Re: Backup to external (via WAN)
Hello,
and welcome to the forums.
Correct, Veeam Backup and Replication only exists for Windows.
Theoretical you could configure multiple backup jobs to two different locations. But I'm pretty sure that this would cause performance issues over time. You could also use any sync tool you like on Linux. Again, I assume that will result in performance issues depending on the amount of data / change rate you have.
The main question for me is: how many physical Linux machines to you have to manage? With more than a hand full machines, I would recommend to get one Windows machine for the backup server. Veeam repositories (where the backups are stored) can be Linux machines.
Best regards,
Hannes

Re: Backup to external (via WAN)
I have two physical servers (Linux /KVM) at location A on which the VMs run.
Also at location A is a backup server that should serve as a target for the Veeam Linux agents (NFS share).
At location B I have a Linux server. I have read here in the forum that some components of the "Veeam Backup and Replication" such as the "Backup Repository" would run under Linux.
Can it possibly be done with it?

Re: Backup to external (via WAN)
For two machines, VBR would be massive overhead. I would go with my initial suggestion and see how it goes.
Sure, it's possible, but one Windows machine is required (Windows 10 is okay). Just to give you an idea what VBR is built for... the quick start guide: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backup/qsg_vsphere/
The agent as standalone is only for very very small environments and basic requirements. All functionality is in the full product.

Re: Backup to external (via WAN)
I don't quite understand them now. VBR = "Veeam Backup and Replication" ?
If I now set this up on a Windows10 machine as you suggest, it is still "massive overhead", isn't it?
Or what exactly is the easiest thing to do on the Windows 10 machine?
The Windows 10 machine is at location B.

yes, VBR = "Veeam Backup and Replication"
for two machines to back up, I see it as overhead. But that's up to you. On that Windows machine, I suggest the following:
0) uninstall the agent as it will be installed later by again
1) install VBR https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=110
2) add Linux Repositories: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=110 / https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=110 (I recommend to use Linux repositories over NFS for performance reasons)
3) create backup jobs for agents: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=110 use select "Managed by backup server"
4) create a backup copy job: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=110

Re: Backup to external (via WAN)
ok, but what would be a sensible approach for such a small environment?
I have a few Linux VM's here that I want to back up with Veeam to a local repository so that I can restore them quickly with the recovery media. I have already tested this and it works.
What I'm missing is an automated backup to an external server.

Re: Backup to external (via WAN)
I have extended the test environment accordingly and secured it via NFS over a firewall/router. I then formatted the backed up machine and deleted the partition table.
The restore ran without any problems.
I will test further and certainly have more questions. Thank you very much for your support.
