Support for LVM thin pool in Veeam Recovery Media

Post by Hejah » 1 person likes this post

Hallo,
it would be nice if you could add support for LVM thin provisioning in the "Veeam Recovery Media".

Currently it is possible to backup backup LVM volumes which are stored in a LVM thin pool.
But if you restore the system via Veeam Recovery Media it is only possible to restore the LVM volumes in a LVM thin pool, it is only possible to restore them as regular LVM volume.

Even if I create a LVM thin pool via command line it is not possible to select it as target for the restor.

I also see that after a proxmox restore the LVM-thin volume called "Local-LVM" is not restored adequately.
(there is a question mark next to it)

Without LVM-thin restore we do not have a usable restore of proxmox server

Hi,

Noted. Did you have a chance to check whether Recovery ISO CLI volume restore works for thin LVMs?

Thanks!

That is, you cannot create a thin pool and a thin volume via on it via CLI and then use CLI to restore volumes from backup to that thin volume, is that correct?

Thanks

My use scenario:

I install Proxmox which be dwfault installs at my boot drive an LVM and a LVM thin volume.
I make a full backup of the disk with veeam linux agent (not cli) to another local disk.
The backup says ok

Then I try to restore the above image with bootable veeam CD .
The restore says OK
I boot the proxmox which boots fine
Then I go to proxmox web page (it is the default way of controlling it , having reports, make new VMs etc)
and I see that the LVM-thin volume is grey (instead of green) and with a question mark.
Without LVM-thin volume I can not create a new VM.
...

Tried again from scratch (New install of Proxmox to my SSD) .
This time I choose to backup not only the install disk (/dev/sda) but also the LVM volumes .
All the above the same....
After restart same question mark and unusable LVM-thin volume.

I think it is easy reproducible by you
Just install latest Proxmox (6.0.x)

Hi again,

I've tried it on thin volumes (got Proxmox installed) and now I clearly see what you mean. Recovery Media can create a thin pool on a VG but for some reason it fails to create a thin volume in the pool. Moreover, even if you create a thin volume on a live system afterwards and attempt to restore LV from the backup, it will attempt to restore it as thick volume with all the implications.

Will certainly look into the issue, thank you!

Hello!

Are there any news on this topic?
Have the same problem, of course :-)

Are there any workarounds?

Hi,

Please try to do the following:

1. Get any distro's liveCD that is capable of creating thin volumes, and boot from it.
2. Create the required disk layout
3. Install VAL onto that liveCD.
4. Enable Recovery UI (please see this post).
5. Perform restore.

Thanks!
