VAL and kernel compatibility
Hi all,
I've a simple question to submit regarding kernel compatibility with VAL agent.
Scenario
VAL 6.3.2
uname -r
5.15.0-205.149.5.1.el8uek.x86_64
cat /etc/redhat-release
Red Hat Enterprise Linux release 8.9 (Ootpa)
dkms status
veeamsnap, 6.3.2.1207: added
Reading KB2804 i notice:
Version Maximum Supported Kernel VAL Build Shipped with VBR Build
8.0-8.10 4.18.0-553.124.1.el8_10 6.3.2.1307 Veeam Backup & Replication 12.3.2.4465 Uses the veeamsnap kernel module.
This means I cannot use 6.3.2 VAL on that Instance in managed mode by VBR server? I need to have an AAP backup (PostgresDB) and I cannot use the "nosnap" agent.
Please let me know if I have other ways to use VAL Agent. Has anyone a previous experience about this issue?
obviously if I run backup job I receive these errors:
16:12:08 Failed to create volume snapshot
16:12:08 Failed to take volume snapshot
16:12:08 Failed to perform managed backup
16:12:08 Veeam snapshot kernel module not found.
Thanks

Re: VAL and kernel compatibility
Hello Antonio,
I see UEK in 5.15.0-205.149.5.1.el8uek.x86_64.
So you are running a higher kernel installed from a different repository?

Re: VAL and kernel compatibility
Hi Rovshan,
I'm not able to reply to your question because is a server in a customer infrastructure.
But if I check in yum.repos.d directory I have these repos:
ksplice-ol8.repo.osmh-backup
oracle-epel-ol8.repo.osmh-backup
osmh.repo
uek-ol8.repo.osmh-backup
mysql-ol8.repo.osmh-backup
oraclelinux-developer-ol8.repo.osmh-backup
pganalyze_collector.repo
virt-ol8.repo.osmh-backup
oci-included-ol8.repo.osmh-backup
oracle-linux-ol8.repo.osmh-backup
pgdg-redhat-all.repo
The bolded repo existing, maybe, it is an OCI instance.
The issue is due to the kernel is greater than required?
Thanks

Re: VAL and kernel compatibility
Hi,
Seems like the machine runs Oracle Linux:

See if https://www.veeam.com/kb4394 could solve the issue.
If the machine runs in Secure Boot mode, extra steps will be needed — see the User Guide here.

Re: VAL and kernel compatibility
You're right! It is an Oracle Linux...
Following KB4394 I receive this warning
warning: the compiler differs from the one used to build the kernel
The kernel was built by: gcc (GCC) 11.4.1 20230605 (Red Hat 11.4.1-2.1.0.1)
You are using: gcc (GCC) 8.5.0 20210514 (Red Hat 8.5.0-20.0.3)
and command ends in a failure.
PS: Secure Boot mode is disabled
