Azure backup data location
Hi. If a customer has an M365 tenant in UKSouth is that data held in Azure UKSouth? i.e. is it best to locate VBO in a different Azure region to the M365 tenant location? Or is M365 data not inside Azure anyway?

Re: Azure backup data location
Hello,
from my point of view, the decision about the backup location can only be answered by the customer itself and his risk assessment on the situation.
I would store at a 3rd party cloud provider in a datacenter that is far away (within legal boundaries if applicable) from the Azure datacenter where my data is in. But that's more a personal preference I would say.
Best regards,
Hannes

Hi HannesK. You are right, but that is exactly why the customer (me) wants to understand the risk.... which is why I'm seeking to clarify if M365 data is held inside Azure?

Re: Azure backup data location
To assure you where the data resides on the Microsoft stack, I would recommend you to talk with your Microsoft contact.
We can only presume it based upon known facts that are public and the M365 portal. The M365 stack runs inside those Azure datacenters but exact placement for certain data points will only be confirmed by official Microsoft persons.

You can find the M365 data location (Country, City) with the help of this page:gingerdazza wrote: ↑Nov 10, 2021 7:47 am Hi HannesK. You are right, but that is exactly why the customer (me) wants to understand the risk.... which is why I'm seeking to clarify if M365 data is held inside Azure?

In the Admin Center of your M365 tenant, you can use the following location to get the location of your data:
Settings > Org settings > Organization profile tab > Data location
