Backing up Teams chats

Post by dcomovanguard »

Support Case #06173339

My client is a financial services firm and they must back up all their communications, including chat data within MS Teams. There's conflicting information as to what VBO is able to back up and what it isn't.

We've read the following two articles:

VBO considerations and limitations:
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/vbo36 ... C4w&ver=70

I have configured VBO for the Graph Export API as they are using modern auth as noted here:
https://www.veeam.com/kb4340

However, it's unclear what Veeam is able to back up with Teams vs. what it cannot.

Please advise and provide clarity.

Support got back to me and said that the following are items that are not backed up due to limitations with the Graph API:

Private and shared channels
One-on-one and group chats

However, a competitor tool claims that they can do it: https://www.smarsh.com/channel/microsoft-teams/\:
"Compliant collaboration: Collaborate seamlessly while meeting strict SEC, FINRA, MiFID II, FCA and other records retention compliance requirements. Direct integration supports capture of one-to-one, group and channel communications, along with files that are shared as part of a conversation."

Hey Drew,

I will discuss with support because the explanation is not completely correct.

- Private and Shared Channels chat backup will come in our next major release. Those chats are not protected because we are adding the entire backup of those specific channels in that version
- One-on-one and group chats: Yes, this is possible with the Team Chats API, but we haven't implemented because of financial reasons. At this point in time, there is no deduplication on those (it is coming, MSFT is working on it on our request). It means that if someone sends 1 message (or even a smiley or I don't know what) to a group with a 5000 members, then the message will be downloaded 5000 times, and also, the API call (which needs to be paid) will be triggered 5000 times. For that reason, we decided to hold off of that for now.

Hope it makes sense
