Backup on a NAS

Post by EricF »

Hello,
I try to store Veeam 365 backups on a NAS. The server can only connect to it with SMB1.5. When I add a backup repository with the UNC path, Veeam refuses to add it. Is it possible to add it ?

Below are SMB Infos :

For VBO365 and NAS, follow this KB Article.
The NAS needs to be added to the same windows Active directory Domain as the VBO365 Backup Proxy. SMB 3.0 needs to be used. SMB 1 is not supported.

https://www.veeam.com/kb2971

SMB Storage for VBO365 backups is not really recommended. VBO365 stores the backups in databases, and databases should not be running on an smb share. Really bad design for performance :)

I've seen this KB. The plan first was to keep the NAS out of the domain. Is it the only solution ?

The VBO365 Proxy Services runs under the SYSTEM Account. The only way, the SYSTEM Account can connect over SMB, is to allow the Computer Object in the Active Directory to access the NAS. You won't have that possibility without an active directory.

If you want to use the NAS, consider to use ISCSI for creating the backup repo. SMB is never a good solution. Especially not for the database format of the VBO365 backup repos.
