Change in licensing?
I was reading the user guide for v7, am I correct that we no longer need a license for backup of Teams objects and non-personal SharePoint sites?
In previeus version of documentation, the description was:
Microsoft SharePoint Online and on-premises Microsoft SharePoint personal sites
Additionally, each user in your Microsoft 365 subscription (or on-premises deployment) that has been granted access to team, communication, collaboration and other non-personal SharePoint sites that you plan to back up must be licensed. If you have a hybrid SharePoint deployment (on-premises Microsoft SharePoint and SharePoint Online), and the same user has access to both, then only one Veeam license is required.
Microsoft Teams teams
Each user in your Microsoft 365 subscription that has been granted access to Microsoft Teams objects that you plan to back up must be licensed.
So every user that had access to a Teams site or a SharePoint site needed a license.
But now, in the v7 documentation, for SharePoint the statement is that only a license is needed for personal SharePoint Site:
Microsoft SharePoint Online and on-premises Microsoft SharePoint personal sites
A personal SharePoint site of a licensed user consumes one Veeam license unit.
And no license is needed for:
Microsoft Teams objects
These objects do not consume units from the Veeam license.
Group and non-personal SharePoint sites
These sites do not consume units from the Veeam license.
But in the documentation, there is still 1 alinea that says we still need licenses for the users that have access to a SharePoint site...
All users in your Microsoft 365 subscription or on-premises deployment that are members of a backed-up team or have access to a backed-up team, communication, collaboration and other non-personal SharePoint sites must be licensed. If you have a hybrid SharePoint deployment (on-premises Microsoft SharePoint and SharePoint Online), and the same user has access to both, then only one Veeam license is required.
Can someone clarify this please?

Hello Bert
Users with access to a protected SharePoint side or which are members of a protected team still needs to be licensed. You have quoted the correct statement about this from the user guide:

Re: Change in licensing?
Hi Bert,
To provide an example:
a SharePoint personal site -> needs a license
a Team with 10 members -> a Team itself doesn't need a license; 10 team members need licenses
a non-personal SharePoint site with 100 users that access it -> a site itself doesn't need a license; 100 site users need licenses
I hope it helps to get the idea.

Re: Change in licensing?
Hello everyone,
I still don't understand. If I have, let's say, 5 licensed users, and I have a backup job for a Team in which 20 users have access, 5 licensed and 15 not licensed (and I am not interested in backing up personal data for those 15 users), how many Veeam Backup licenses do I need?

Re: Change in licensing?
20x licenses. Because 20x of your M365 users have access to the Team.

Fabian

Thanks for reply,
So, what does it mean:
"Microsoft Teams objects.
These objects do not consume units from the Veeam license." ?

Re: Change in licensing?
While you need to have the licenses for your 20 User, the product won't show it as used in the license information."Microsoft Teams objects.
These objects do not consume units from the Veeam license." ?
Example:
- Backup Job for 5 User
- Backup Job for 1 Teams where this 5 user and 15 others have access
You need to have:
- 20 license
What will the product show in license information:
- Users 20 (5 used)
Best,
Fabian
