Count of needed Licenses for backing up the entire site

Post by grigatkis » 1 person likes this post

Hi,

in terms of project planning, it would be really convenient to have a way to find out how many licenses I'd need to do a full backup of a Microsoft 365 site.

Figuring out a couple of users is easy, but if I do that all of the other 'stuff' such as shared mailboxes fall to the wayside.

As things are, the best way I know is to purchase less licenses than I know I'll need, install veeam and let the first job tell me how many licneses I'm missing. I hope I don't need to explain how this is suboptimal for project planning.

Does anyone know of a better way? I'm not afraid to count mailboxes manually (or export them with powershell) if that is what it takes. But even if I do that, Veeam O365 licensing is completely intransparent to me.

Best regards

The license requirements is really simple.
- Every "Exchange Online Plan licensed Mailbox" need a VBO365 license.
- Every Office 365 User, which has access to a sharepoint site or Team, needs a VBO365 License.
- For Every One Drive, you are doing a backup, needs a license.
The license is cumulative. That means, If you have done a backup of user1 mailbox, the same license will be used for his sharepoint sites and his One Drive.

The best way to count the necessary vbo365 licenses, is to count the licensed O365 Users. Each User with one of the following licenses (not a complete list) will need a VBO365 License:
- Office 365 E1, Office 365 E3, Office 365 E5
- Microsoft 365 E3, Microsoft 365 E5
- Microsoft 365 Business Basic, Microsoft 365 Business Standard, Microsoft 365 Business Premium

You can also use the Veeam Calculator for getting the needed license for each data type.

A small addition to the above:
- To back up a general SharePoint site or a team, every Office 365 User, which has access to this site or Team, needs a VBO365 License.
- For every personal SharePoint site, you are doing a backup, you need a license.

Thanks for your advice. I'm not sure how I failed to find the Calculator, but it was very helpful.
