deduplication on attachment base

Hi everyone, dear PMs,

if I take a look at my users data regarding emails, I do see the following pattern:

User A sends mail with attachment X to user B
user B sends an email with attachment X to address Y
user Y responds, probably with the same attachment X
user B sends email to user A with attachment X as reference

So you're having 4 mails with one and the same attachment and if that attachment is 5 MB ins size, you're wasting 15 MB through this conversation. I'm not 100 % sure about it but I do think that vbo's orientation is some kind of message-ID in terms of deduplication.

It would safe a lot of space if identical attachments could be only stored once and then be linked to other messages with the same attachment (or should I say hash?).

Is it already implemented? If not, was it possible for future releases? Thanks!

Hi Michael

We don't have deduplication for the same message/attachment between different mailboxes.
The message and attachment will be protected multiple times (Inbox and "Send Items" Folder).

I will note your improvement request, but no promises if it can or will be done in a future version.

Talked to the team. It's not possible with the current EWS API.
We will revisit the topic after we switched to GraphAPI for Exchange Online backup.
GraphAPI may have additional capabilities for us to use by the time we have to migrate.
