Deleting a single email off O365 Exchange backups

Post by mobregon »

Is it possible to delete a single email from Veeam O365 backups?

Thanks,
MO.

I work for a government contractor. We run into situations where we need this functionality pretty regularly. Unfortunately, a Veaam representative confirmed that there is currently no way to do this. I had to use PowerShell to remove all of the backups of a user's mailbox from the repository.

I'm curios what are your plans on addressing these situations when we introduce support for immutable O365 backups down the road? Are you simply not going to enable an option to make your backups immutable?

There is often a missinterpretation of laws, where for example GDPR is interpreted in a way that you have to alter not only the production data but as well all backup targets.

If this is the case, I think we have some whitepaper or web session recordings that address this topic. Please let me know.

Hi, sorry to revive this older thread.
Just wondering if there have been any changes to this since these posts about 18 months ago?
I have a need to delete an individual email from our Veeam O365 backups too, and found my way here from searching.

I think the consensus is still basically "you will have to remove the entire mailbox from the backups and let it start again from scratch", as per the first reply from jB-jp?
Running V 6.1.0.423 just fyi

Hi Geoff

Yes, it's still not possible to remove a single item.
Could you maybe please share with us your use case?

Thanks

Sorry to revive this old thread again

Is this a supported feature now or not doable yet?

My usecase is: company has received cyberflashing emails that have been backed up, the police have asked us to delete all instances of the email across backups and archives

Hi Danny,

It’s not possible to delete individual emails or files from a backup. You can only delete entire objects, such as mailboxes, SharePoint, OneDrive, or Teams, and all their backups.

May I ask if you’re using immutable backup storage? If so, you won’t be able to delete any backups.

Best,
