Difference between User Site and Personal Site

When you create a 365 backup job and select users you can select or exclude specifically the Mailbox, OneDrive, and Site. I understand the difference between the OneDrive and Site option here.

But there is also the option to select Personal Sites under the SharePoint sites items.

What is the difference, if any, between the 'User/Site' and the 'Sites > Personal Sites > User ' options?

Both options are protecting the personal SharePoint site of the user. There is no difference between User/Site and SPO Personal Sites.
Just run a test in my lab with two different backup jobs to two empty repositories. In both cases, I can restore the same content. The content of the personal SharePoint site.

That's correct. To make it even more confusing (but we are not using that) some people will refer to it as "My site"

From SharePoint online Admin Portal (active sites) I can see only SharePoint sites, not Personal Sites!
