Our O365 tenant is modern authentication only (with MFA), so I'm finding it difficult to setup email notifications in VBO. The Veeam setup guide clearly states that "Only basic authentication on an SMTP server is supported. To authenticate MFA-enabled user accounts, Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 needs an app password."
I thought perhaps the API created for VBO could be used to provide a client ID and Secret, I haven't been able to figure out what exactly need to be configured on the O365 side to provide an "app password". Maybe the API doesn't have the right permissions/roles, i'm not sure.
I thought the following MS KB doc would help, but no dice yet - https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/Exchan ... office-365.
Suggestions? A Veeam KB on how to setup notifications for O365 tenants with modern auth only (and MFA in this case) sure would be helpful.
Thanks

Re: Email Notifications Setup for Modern Authentication
Creating an APP Password is really simple.
You need todo it with the user, which needs to have an app password.
An admin cannot create it on behalf of the user. Veeam cannot do it for you.
Don‘t forget to license the user with at least an Exchange Plan 1 license. Or he will not be able to send out mails.

Re: Email Notifications Setup for Modern Authentication
Thanks for the feedback Mildur. It appears we do not permit APP passwords in our org, so I can potentially just use a normal password (and have some mitigating controls so that we stay in compliance).
Regardless, the logon still isn't working (with a new user with E1 license with a configured mailbox) .. not sure what is going on now ..

Re: Email Notifications Setup for Modern Authentication
Your welcome
If you want to use the users normal password, you must enable basic auth smtp.
You can enable basic auth smtp for the specific user or for the entire tenant in Exchange Powershell.

If you have enforced Modern Auth and disabled Basic Auth in the tenant, this will not work. You need the app password.so I can potentially just use a normal password
