From Object storage to Tape ?

Post by Ejdesgaard »

Hello,

We want to backup vbo to a local s3 compatible object storage and from there dump it to tape.
The main reason for using object storage instead of exposing block device(s) is that it's much more cost effective and performance is good enough.

Is this possible today or are we talking about a feature request ?

Hey,

It is not possible today.

You are right that it is much more cost effective, and we see the switch to object storage being more and more important. In fact, a lot of new future functionality will be for object storage just because of the possibilities of the platform

But back to your tape request. Is tape really necessary? Or would be a copy to another object storage also be ok? This seems to me like a more reasonable solution at this point in time?

We are looking into the immutable feature of the object storage, but at this point in time, it's required to have an offline backup and for this, tape is used.

I guess the workaround currently is to have 2 vbo jobs, one that backup to object storage according to the retention requirements and 1 that runs with 1 retention, that vbr then can backup and thereby include in the tape rotation.

Any better ideas ?

Unfortunately, not at this point in time. However, I do like your request for immutability :-)
