GFS Support for Veeam Backup for M365

Post by EricinIT »

Hi,

I've got a customer asking to do GFS restore points for 7 yearly restore points of M365 data. All the repositories are object storage. I could just do 7 year retention on the repository, but then I have to keep every day's restore point for 7 years. With Veeam 12.1, I could backup the object storage used by Veeam Backup for M365.

Are there better methods to accomplish this?

Hello Eric

As you are aware, Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 doesn't provide GFS retention as an option.
The only workaround would be to create a new jet DB based repository every year and run a full backup to it. That jet DB based repository can then be protected by a VBR server (to Tape or disk storage). I don't recommend this approach if the customer has a large M365 environment.
If the customer wants to have a cheap solution for 7 years of backups, you may checkout prices for a backup copy job to archive storages such as Azure Archive or AWS S3 Glacier.

Please note, using VBR to backup VB365 object storage repositories is not supported. We cannot guarantee successful recovery from such backups.
We know that protecting object storage repositories is important to our customer and it's on our radar for future research.

Best,
