is it possible to backup and restore OneNote files?

Post by st_wa »

Hello all,
is it possible to backup and restore OneNote files on a SharePoint with Veeam Backup for O365?
We are currently testing another software. There it is not possible according to the manufacturer. All other files can be backed up. But OneNote files cannot.
Thank you and best regards
Steffen

Hello,
I remember reading a great blog post about this not that long ago; give the next article a read, and let us know if this is what you are looking for:

Backup works.
Restore back to M365 works only if you use modern auth with legacy Authentification enabled. We cannot restore OneNote back to the source when using modern Auth Only.

Considerations and Limitations
Restore of OneNote notebooks from backups of Microsoft SharePoint, Microsoft OneDrive for Business and Microsoft Teams data for organizations with modern app-only authentication is not supported.

Steffen,

The above answers are correct. We are waiting for MSFT to deliver a graph API that can restore the onenote data back to the original location. We do protect it (hoping that we have an API for it soon) and restoring can be done by doing an export from the files, and importing it (read-only) into a local onenote.

I'm still seeking clarity here. Microsoft is deprecating basic auth, so we need to use modern auth only.

The user guide and KB3146 state that OneNote restore is not supported. However, in this forum post you are saying that restore is possible, but not to the original location. Restore as a file would still work.
If this is the case, would you not need to amend the KB and User Guide?

Hey Aleksi,

It is true that we can export them and import it afterwards into a local onenote, but it still means you cannot get the information in the online OneNote (although copy/paste will work but requires manual work). You might be right that we need to put "to original location" in those docs. I will think about this and discuss it.

Has something been done at this point, has Microsoft provided a Graph API in the meantime, with which it is possible to restore OneNote files to the original location? Or is it foreseeable when Microsoft will provide a Graph API?

Hi Christoph,

The limitation is still there. We're investigating other new APIs that may allow us to overcome it.

[MERGED] Adding "legacy authentication protocols" to Modern authentication

Post by DHuppertz »

Hello together,

if I understand the documentation correctly, I couldn't restore OneNote from SharePoint/OneDrive unless I will activate "allow for using legacy authentication protocols" ?

And how could this be added to an organization with already modern authentication registered ?

Thank you

Hello Dieter

Your understanding is correct.
We depend on official API's from Microsoft to be able to restore OneNote data back to the original location.
Our teams are investigating possible API's, but we can't provide an ETA yet.

The good news, your OneNote data is protected. For now you can restore it as a *.onepkg file and then open this file with your OneDrive client.

Hi Dieter

Personal OneNote files are stored in each users OneDrive. You should see them when you try to restore OneDrive data.
Path --> \Documents\OneNote Notebooks

You can save it to a local disk and provide the file to the user:
