License used in VBM365 does not match to what M365 Admin center lists?

My question is that our client has raised a question that the license used as reported by Veeam is high to what we actually see on their M365 admin center page, listing all their licenses.

I can generate a license overview report in VBM365, but that lists all the users and the total number of licenses. Is there a way that I can match what VBM365 reports to what is reported on Azure/M365 admin center.

For our clients, we have individual backup job configured at the Org level, which includes the personal sharepoint sites. The way I understand is that if a user has M365 license and has mailbox, onedrive and perosnal sharepoint site, then this will be counted as one license in veeam. So it should match with what M365 admin center lists.
It would help to find a way to explain why veeam reports higher usage of license, than the total listed on M365.

Hi Sumeet

You can use Get-VBOLicensedUser to export license details to excel. It will show username, license status and M365 Organization Name. Use PowerShell or excel to create a report grouped by M365 tenant.

Correct. In such case, only one VB365 license will be consumed.

It would help to find a way to explain why veeam reports higher usage of license, than the total listed on M365.

Just remember, that a M365 user is still licensed in VB365 if the last backup was created in the last 31 days. If your customer has deleted the M365 account or removed a M365 license from an account, it will take 31+1 days until the license is automatically revoked in VB365.

Some powercli/powershell commands that we can provide our clients to run on their tenancy to get the exact list of users or mailboxes that have some M365 license applied, which then causes Veeam to apply a license. This will be of great help.

I used the Get-VBOLicensedUser to export the license details, and this list has many entries that are not users, few of them are like conference room name or something like a shared mailbox, so the next question is why are these assigned Veeam license. Hence my question above, that if there is a way to extract the list from M365 tenancy and then use that to compare with the output of Get-VBOLicensedUser list, will make it very easy to prove our clients the reason for the veeam license count.

Example - Microsoft E5 or F3 series or Microsoft Exchange P2 or Microsoft Teams Shared Devices and so on. Which precise license type in M365 will equate to a license usage in Veeam?

Hi sumeet,

M365 license type doesn't matter. If a backed up user has an active M365 license with SharePoint or Exchange plans, it gets licensed by Veeam as well.
