Massively Extended Teams & SharePoint Backup Times
Hello Everyone,
We’re currently facing major issues with Teams and SharePoint backup times, and despite opening several support cases, we’re not getting anywhere.
The first time we saw this was after upgrading a single client to v8.1.2. Their Teams backup duration jumped from ~6 hours to 14 hours, and sometimes up to 24 hours. While troubleshooting that case, I checked other clients and noticed a general rise in backup times, which I reported to support. Still no resolution on that. Case #07758560
After upgrading, we’d occasionally see longer backup times for some clients, but it was manageable. However, something seems to have happened around 1 August 2025. We are now seeing this problem across several client setups. All clients are in their own pods — some use proxy pools, others don’t.
We are seeing Teams backup go from ~4 hours avg. to 14+ hours. This is a 3100 object backup, and there is no huge spikes in items.
I tested it and without running any other job I saw it throttle on just 2 Teams for over 2 hours. Case #07789989
We also have a client with 12 proxies in a pool, where jobs are going from 1-2 hours to anywhere from 8 to 24 hours. This also constantly has a seperate SharePoint or Teams backup running because of their size.
The other jobs are 2000-3000 objects each. They continually have 25+ backups running and all we can really do is stop the retries and wait.
We have followed Support on all clients, by for example deleting backup appliances but we dont seem to be going anywhere and unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a common occurrence between them, that isn't also true on an unaffected client.
Is anyone else seeing similar behavior since upgrading to 8.1.2 and found a workaround or solution?
Could Microsoft be dealing with some performance degradation that is hammering a selection of our clients?
We didn’t see Teams/SharePoint issues on this scale with previous Veeam versions. Any feedback or shared experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Hi David,
I cannot comment on the root cause of the issue you're experiencing - so far I haven't heard anything similar from other customers. However, I'll ask engineers to revisit your cases and consider them as a whole.
Thanks!

can be totally unrelated.... but i do see, especially on bigger customers, "application throtteling", alot on teams/sharepoint jobs... so for some reason i would assume MS has some issues, or is throtteling application api access way stronger ?!

Hi, I also see increased SharePoint and OneDrive backup times after updating to 8.1.2.
Haven't had time yet to open a support case for it, but glad to see I'm not the only one with this issue!

Bert,
If you open a case, please post its ID here so that I could follow-up.

This is exactly what we are facing issue with a client -- veeam-backup-for-microsoft-365-f47/shar ... 99789.html
the backup duration has increased and throttling causing issues with clients users or applications.

Re: Massively Extended Teams & SharePoint Backup Times
We are still seeing issues but working with support has helped with some of them.
We have been able to bring down the SharePoint backup duration on one client and the Teams Backup duration on another.
There is still some ways to go as testing these jobs takes 12+ hours currently and that makes troubleshooting drag out a lot.
