NATS server password
Hi,
during the upgrade to version 8 I the NATS server password copied to the clipboard got lost due to another clipboard copy operation. Is there a way to retrieve or reset the NATS password?
Franc.

Re: NATS server password
Franc,
I believe (but not certain) that the default installation does not have TLS encryption enabled. So I suggest you create a support call to see if this is the case and if they are able to retrieve the password. I'm afraid I don't know how to retrieve it myself

Re: NATS server password
I had the same issue last Friday. Since no further backups had been taken, I took the quicker solution of rolling back the VM to the pre-upgrade snapshot, and performing the upgrade again.
I'd be interested to find out what methods there will be to resolve this in the future though. Hopefully a KB article explaining how to reset the password in NATS and Veeam at least, even if it's not possible to extract the currently configured password.

Re: NATS server password
I assumed that NATS was a tool created by Veeam, but it seems to be a 3rd party application.
I found this:
https://docs.nats.io/running-a-nats-ser ... e_password
I downloaded the NATS tool for Windows from here:
https://github.com/nats-io/natscli/releases
I ran the NATS tool using:
Nats.exe server passwd
This generated a new bcrypt string with the new password. You can update the config file located in c:\programdata\nats with this new encrypted password. However, the big question is how do you update Backup for Microsoft 365 to use this new password, where is it stored? Because after changing the password and updating the config file, the Backup for Microsoft 365 services fail to start due to authentication issues with NATS.
I guess many more people are going to run into this issue, since it’s not very obvious that you need to store this automatically generated password before you continue with the install (only the installation guide mentions this). The setup tool doesn’t warn you about this. It only has the ‘copy’ link next to the generated password field. Also, an uninstall of Backup for Microsoft 365 doesn’t remove the NATS server, neither can NATS be uninstall from add/remove programs. You have to manually remove the service and it’s configuration file.
Supporting is discussing internally how to solve this. They didn’t have an answer yet about this.

Re: NATS server password
If support is discussing this internally, it means it will be with my DEV and QA teams today so stay tuned.

Re: NATS server password
Support forwarded the issue to R&D. They don’t have a solution on how to reset the password other than an uninstall and reinstall of Backup for Microsoft 365.
