Office 365 backup on Azure VM

Post by herbm »

I am trying to get a Scheduled backup to run on an Azure VM after a restart.
All this VM does is o365 backup once a day. So no point in letting it stay up all the time and spend $$.
I have it turn on at midnight via StartAZureV2VM which is an Azure Automation runbook.
BAckup is scheduled at 1AM. But it never kicks off... Support thinks the services arent starting
I have also tried a sceduled task with a bat file as well as running powershell script.

Manual backup start via console or script works fine. Also If i start the VM myself and schedule a job 10 min or so later..that work...
I cant figure why auto start doesnt work. Support was unable to figure this as they feel its a MIcrosoft issue - Veeam Support - Case # 03424280
Does anyone have any ideas?
thank you,

Have you managed to verify that the VM is starting on-time via the runbook?

Wondering if the runbook is localized to a different timezone and it's just missing the backup Window?

Maybe try inverting the job and have it come on at midday with a job starting at 1 PM so you can monitor it while awake, and ensure it's all happening in the order (and at the time) you expect.

I will try that...I know bringing it up manually work.

I also put a time sync app on to make sure it was kicking off at the proper time..
But might be better if I can see it

thanks

Herb,

I think that the troubleshooting that Josh proposes is the best way to figure out what is going on. Also, in the Azure portal you should be able to see if the VM actually kicks off by looking at the CPU / Memory and Network monitors.

I have checked the VM and it is definitely booting.
As part of troubleshooting with support I reset the schedule so I could monitor it live.
After that I reset it back to the original time. And now all of sudden it works!
Only thing I changed was the backup schedule time.
2 successful backups!
Not sure why this made it work, but I am glad it did.

thanks

Herb,
Now I actually have no idea what caused this but glad it "magically" works :-)
