restore public folders

Post by oscarm »

Is it possible to do a restore of a specific public folder based on the name?

We backup our full tenant, and now someone wants a restore of a specific public folder. In the restore explorer I cannot seem to find any specifics for public folders.

How is his done?

Oscar

Hi Oscar

Public Folders are protected if you use v7 P7.0.0.3968 or later and the right permissions are applied:
- Exchange Online license for the specified user in the M365 organization registration:
- Owner Permission on Public Folder for this user
- Azure App Permission: Office 365 Exchange Online > Exchange.ManageAsApp
- Azure App Permission: Granting Global Reader Role to Azure AD Application

If you have configured this requirements, the Explorer for Exchange will show you the public folder and it's content. Public Folder in our explorer can be found in the primary hierarchy mailbox.

Hi Fabian,

Thanks for your reply. We use 7.1.0.1501. I have seen the 7.0.0.3968 was released 2023-07-13. I am sure the customer was onboarded before that point in time. What I don't understand is this piece:

Owner — requires to back up public folder mailboxes in organizations with modern app-only authentication. So the application shoud be owner of the public folder mailboxes. But if the customer is onboarded with a version prior to 7.0.0.3968 chances are when the Application was created this was not in place.

So if this is the case it is save to say the public folders are never been backed up because the application was never made owner of the public folder mailboxes. This should be automatically set up with newer versions on creating the azure Ad application right?

Hi Oscar

In the M365 organization properties there is a username specified.
This user requires a Exchange Online License and owner permission on all Public Folders.

Image

If the permission is missing, you should see an failure message in your job session: https://www.veeam.com/kb3093

Code: Select all

Processing mailbox PublicFolderMailbox@xxxxxxxx.onmicrosoft.com failed with error:
Failed to synchronize item changes in folder: FOLDERNAME..
Access is denied. Check credentials and try again., ICS synchronization failed.
This should be automatically set up with newer versions on creating the azure Ad application right?
This is a manual configuration. But it will lead to the mentioned error message if not configured.

I suggest to open a support case and check together with our support team why the public folder are not visible in the restore explorer.
