Retention ploicy

Post by Hugo-Stiglitz »

Hello! We use Veeam O365 for backup mailboxes O365. If we will lose our mailboxes in O365 we can restore thear to on-prem Exchange from backup Veeam.
To save space, we only need to keep the actual state of the mailboxes. Which retention policy we must use ?

Hello,
and welcome to the forums.

Yes, restore to on-prem Exchange, export to PST etc. is possible.

One day retention sounds close to "current state" for me (I'm not sure how good the idea really is, but technically it sounds correct to me).

Best regards,
Hannes

For your use case you need to select snapshot-based retention.

Example:
I have group with 3000 backup mailboxes.
On the next day 100 mailboxes leave from group
When will making backup with 2900 mailboxes what will be with 100 mailboxes?
Will be they deleted from storage?

Hello,
one day can be configured with "specified number of days" (last option in the dropdown field)

the data of the 100 mailboxes will be deleted after one day, yes. if you use object storage (recommended with 3000 mailboxes), then you should see that. for the classic jet database storage, I believe to remember that the space is only marked as free (like in most database technologies if something gets deleted)

Best regards,
Hannes

PS: licenses of the 100 mailboxes will still be "in use" for 30 days
