Searching for a S3 Object Storage Appliance

Post by IT0818 »

So far we have backed up our environment on an SMB fileshare.
With a size of now over 30TB, we would like to switch to an S3 object storage system as soon as possible.
I need a system that is easy to use and that I can replicate across two sides or let veeam do backup copy jobs.
We don't want multiple hardware nodes per site, but if possible a S3 storage appliance for approx. 64TB that can be expanded (additional disks or Nodes) in the future if necessary.

Qnap / QuObjects is easy to use but as I can read in the forum has already led to some performance problems.

Does anyone have experience with OSNEXUS QuantaStor or with Scality Artesca?

What would you recommend or no longer recommend?

For just 64TB take a server with up 12 or 24 bays , with several SSD or HDD and deploy a Minio Single Node Multi Drive. Easy to mantain and reliable.
Remember that currently the main problem of S3 with VBO items , are the object size. Object storages works great with object of more than 8MB , but you will not have too much "emails" of more than 8MB. Based in our stats, the 90% of the objects are smaller. Then your performance is downgraded too much dude IO. If you can afford, today SSD QLC are cheap and you can get SSD up 30TB per unit.

If you want a propietary appliance, check maybe Object First.

We will be using Exagrid for this. We currently use them for backing up our virtual machines and Agents. They are expected to release a firmware update soon to allow object storage backups.
