SMB Support for Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365
I would like to submit a technical feature request concerning the integration and enhancement of Veeam for Microsoft 365, as well as further support for SMB shares as a repository target.
It is crucial for us and out clients that Veeam provides and keeps more comprehensive support for local storage solutions, particularly in terms of backing up Microsoft 365 data. The current situation, where SMB shares are no longer supported in the future, results in significant disadvantages for our customers who rely on local storage. Additionally, a revision of the product regarding the integration of Backup & Recovery and Veeam for M365 would be desirable to ensure improved performance. The proposed options with iSCSI or local storage are not optimal from our perspective, as they introduce additional complexity and potential points of failure into the infrastructure.
We believe that a return to supporting SMB shares would not only meet the requirements of many customers but also significantly enhance the flexibility and user-friendliness of Veeam solutions.
Integration of both products is common among other providers, and their repository technology is significantly more flexible. For example Nakivo supports transporter services directly implemented into Synology or QNAP drives, with all modern features of performance and security.

SMB shares on QNAP/Synology are responsible for easily 9 out of 10 data losses we see in Veeam Support. SMB protocol and non-HA shares backed by software RAID is just a really bad combination of technologies, which is why we're discontinuing SMB support completely.

My request was not written to get a response like this. you just reply to what is the official dead end for support. I know that already.
I know every aspect and argument of your side already, as I am in contact with the german partner staff.
Therefore I want to stress out hat it's not the SMB shares or its protocol, but it's your technology of using an old fashioned file based database technology behind. If you look at Nakivo, they provide software packages for QNAP, Synology and others to provide a transporter there that stores data there and therefore this repository is local on the NAS. this kind of repository interface would be urgently needed for veeam as general repository technique, in addition to the complex S3 Object Storage model.
this is a voice of a Veeam partner, and please respect those voices with care. thank you

Re: SMB Support for Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365
sorry for replying a bit nervous on your comment. I want to add that storing on SMB Shares was never an issue with all our client setups. even not with the 365 product. It makes me nervous if we need so switch every setup to something else, even that there is no smart(!) alternative for local backups.
perhaps, in additon to the idea of an own app running as agent on NAS drives, it would be a good idea to provide a Veeam supported S3 Object storage package for the known NAS manufacturers as Synology, QNAP etc. in order to support a well working and modern local storage solution, which would lead into full compatibility to your C2 cloud storages. what do you think?

I see many object storage offerings from the above-mentioned vendors already in the Veeam Ready database?

thanks, I searched for Synology there, but I can only find Synology providing C2 Object Storage as a CLOUD SERVICE. I was talking about LOCAL STORAGE.

Did you get my points above?

QNAP certainly has local storage. If you're married to Synology in your business, then may be you should reach out to them and ask to certify their storage for VBM365 as well? It's not hard, I see they certified many local storage devices for VBR so they're certainly well aware of the process.
