For anyone having performance issues with spinning drives and Veeam/365 I found a cheap ($30) program called PrimoCache. I just started trying it but it seems to resolve the issue completely.
I am not associated with the publisher in any way.

Re: Solution for performance/disk thrashing
Hi Cary,
What issue with the spinning drives did you had? Where you downloading too fast for the disks to follow? Or was it another issue?

Re: Solution for performance/disk thrashing
Mike:
Downloading about 100GB of email from MS took about a day with an SSD but about 4 days with a single 10TB HDD (300/20 cable modem). Disk is beside my desk and it was loud and almost continuous. Installing PrimoCache, giving it 4GB of RAM and a 120GB SSD to play with quieted everything down substantially. It's averaging about 10% cache hit rate during normal daily updates but, Monday morning after the machine had been off all weekend, it was up to almost 30%.
I just installed it so I have 58 days on the trial but I'm absolutely buying the license.
