Teams chat to backup?

Hey guys,

Iam currently setting up veeam o365 backup. But could you please clarify for me if its possible to backup Teams chats? For example 1:1 chats? What is possible to backup from Microsoft Teams?

Teams Chats (1:1, Group Chats) are not possible yet. The reason why it's not yet available are missing public API.
But we are looking into extending this in one of our future versions (unfortunately no ETA to share yet).

Today you can protect the following Teams Data with Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365:
- Teams Channel chats through Teams Export API
- Document library of the SharePoint team site
- Team metadata (settings of the team and information about team members, channels, tabs, applications)

Our upcoming version v8 (Q3 2024) will add support for Shared and Private Teams Channels.

thank you for the very fast anwser. One question, do you mean with Teams Channels through export API the public teams channels? Here is the chat possible? But does it cost more than or is it necessary to make a new contract with microsoft?

A small addition to my previous comment. I was made aware that our APIs are publicly available (but no ETA to share when we can expect it in the product).

Yes, a chat in a Teams Channel can be protected.

But does it cost more than or is it necessary to make a new contract with microsoft?

Microsoft introduced in 2022 dedicated Export APIs for Microsoft Teams messages. Previously it was possible without additional costs through EWS. But the EWS Method was deprecated by Microsoft and will be removed in our product in V8 from the UI. EWS must not used anymore.

VB365 and other backup products must now use the Teams Export API for protecting Microsoft Teams messages.
To be able to use the Export APIs with our product, you have to go through a few configuration steps in Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 and on Microsoft 365/Azure.
On our site, you have to run two powershell cmdlets and edit your organization registration. On Microsoft you have to make sure that your backup application has the ChannelMessage.Read.All permission and subscription assigned.
