Teams license for Veeam Backup User

Post by Akorzzar »

Hello,

we currently use Veeam Backup for Office 365 to Backup Exchange/Sharpoint etc.
Now we want to use the Teams Backup that came with v5. When enabling the Teams functionality on the organization we get the error message "Check Teams License is assigned: License not assigned". Does that mean that the Backup User that we use to authenticate against our AAD domain and is used for other administrative purposes, which currently doesn't have an Office 365 license, needs to have one in order to use this functionality?

Thank you for your help!

Hi!

Yes, a service account must have at least an Exploratory license to access Teams data. And you can always get the full list of required permissions in our documentation.

Thanks!

Hi Polina,
do we need the license for backup or restore (or both)?

Hi Max,

Both backup and restore. With the license, a service account gets access to the TeamspaceAPI plan required for all operations with teams.

Hi Polina,
sorry for the late reply. I had only temporarily assigned a license in order to complete the organization setup. Afterwards the backup job ran successfully and it does until now.
Does the API stay open even after the license is removed?

From what I'm seeing, it's not necessary when using Modern Authentication without legacy protocols for backing up right?
Would be needed only when restoring?

Hi mrjack007,

I haven't heard of any changes to the existing requirements, but let me verify it...

@mrjack007,

Your finding is correct: with modern app-only authentication, a Teams license is not needed for backup operations; it's needed only to restore the data.
We're going to update the Help Center accordingly soon.

Thanks!

It is still Teams Essentials at minimum, right?

Even Exploratory is enough if available.

Hello,
How can I know where the licenses are used in "Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365".
If I look under "Licence", I only have the total of activated and used licenses.
Under Veeam B&R "Licence", I can create a report where I see used licenses.
Possible via a PowerShell command?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Gianluca,

Are you looking for a breakdown to see what user object specifically consumes a license?

I've found "Reports" -> "License Overview".
Possible to schedule this report with Powershell or a normal batch file?

It's strange because this report say 132 licenses used, but on the program, selecting "License", I just see 128 used. Why this difference?

thanks

Hi Gianluca,

When you build the report, you select the timeframe, and hence the report shows licenses consumed during that period; while the console displays the current state. So, currently, you have 128 licenses used, and 4 licenses were revoked because, for example, some users are not backed up anymore for any reason.

Here you can get an example of how to automate sending reports: https://github.com/VeeamHub/powershell/ ... Generation

Thanks!
