Ubuntu 24.04 for Proxy

Just found out that Ubuntu 24.04 is not supported as proxy OS for VBM365.
Is there any good reason fot that? Will support be added in the near future?

Hello Florin,

We require .NET 8 components from Microsoft's package feed --> Backup Proxy Server - .NET requirements.

Microsoft .NET Runtime 8.0.7 or later. For Linux, you must install .NET packages from Microsoft package feed. For more information, see this Microsoft article.

However, Microsoft doesn't support these .NET components directly from their packages feed for Ubuntu 24.04 --> Overview of .NET on Ubuntu.

Is there any sort of best practices guide on how to properly setup a ubuntu 22.04 proxy for VBM365?

Hello Florin,

Our best practice guide will be updated to V8 in a few months when we have enough feedback and experience from production deployments. Until then, follow the information in our help center for system requirements. If you assign your Ubuntu proxies to a proxy pool, you will be able to replace them later with new proxies built according to best practices on the fly.

However, if you have a larger environment with thousands of users, I would suggest involving a Veeam system engineer for the upgrade planning. The default deployment in V8 for the new PostgreSQL and NATS server may need to be adjusted according to what you need to protect.

We just ran into this same situation, but when looking into it, it seems that the package feed from Canonical meet all of the version requirements for Veeam. I just tested on a 24.04 VM and the version of .NET installed by the default package manager was 8.0.10.

I presume that Microsoft and Canonical are building their packages from the same source.

Hi Kobus,

My understanding is that Microsoft's .NET package uses an additional log mechanism compared to packages from other sources. This is why we require our customers to use these packages from the Microsoft feed, as it helps our customer support team in investigating technical issues in your support cases.

It's possible that Ubuntu 24.04 will be supported with a future patch, but currently, it is not.
