Apply tags on restore

Post by mbroaders »

We backup Azure VMs by using Azure tags. We also have a sandbox DR subscription for testing restores of backups. When restoring backups to test them the Veeam Azure tag also gets restored with the VM which then adds it into the backup job.

I have created an Azure policy to stop this occurring but i was hoping that an option to select tags on restore would be available in the restore wizard. Is this part of an upcoming release?

When we restore, we add all the original tags.

Could you clarify what the main use case would be to remove tags during the restore?

We use Azure tags in Veeam Backup policies to select virtual machines to backup. For example we may have a tag "Veeam Backup Policy" with a value of Gold, Silver or Bronze. This puts the VM into the correct backup policy.

We restore VMs into a separate subscription with an isolated network to allow for DR testing. The machines that are restored as part of testing are automatically added to the backup policies as the VM tag "Veeam Backup Policy" is included with the restore. This is not the desired outcome for these VMs.

My expectation would be that i could choose to restore tags with the Virtual Machine. This is already an option with VBR on restores to VMWare.
