Backup of server in Azure to on-prem

Post by toreml »

Hi.
We have a customer that will have a server in azure that they will do a dump of a Postgressql database which is software as a service - if possible.

Can I install a Veeam agent on this server and use a VBR locally in our datacenter as destination for that backup - or does the VBR also be in azure?

If I can it there any documentation that you can link to.
And which version of Veeam must we have?

I presume you are talking about Postgres as a service (https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/services/postgresql/)? This is currently not supported by either VBR or Veeam Backup for Azure. You'll have to use some native tools to perform a dump of this.

If however, you have a Windows or Linux server in Azure which makes the dump and you want to back that server up. You can use Veeam Backup for Azure for snapshot management and/or backups to Azure Blob storage. You can then add the Azure Blob storage onto a VBR installation on-premise and use it for restores.

Hi.
Thanks for the reply.

Blob storage is one option - but could I also backup the data directly to out on-premise solution? (no blob storage involved)?

This will mostly depend on network connectivity. You can configure a backup repository in VBR and then use the Veeam Agent for Windows to direct to it. This will require you to open up the required ports etc and I would suggest using a VPN connection (could be done using VeeamPN for example).

@toreml: Just asking, how do you perform the Dump of the PostgeSQL DB. Do you use pg_dump?
