Migrated existing VMs to Azure - BU Options
Hello All.
Sorry for the basic question since we have not run into this yet. We have a customer with 7 Hyper-V VM's on-prem backing up to a local repo and then replicated to the cloud via VCC. All have worked great. However, we recently did a lift and shift of (2) of those VM's to Azure (In test mode right now) and have a point-to-point VPN setup between on-prem and Azure. How would we backup those (2) VM's in Azure? Is there any possibility to back them up to the current local repo?
I will say that they also have an O365 backup as well backing data up to Wasabi. Is there any way to leverage that solution?
In other words, what are my options to provide a backup solution for those (2) VM's in Azure? I expect several more of these coming down the pike so I am curious as to our options with Veeam.
Thanks very much!
Dave

Hi Dave,
You can use Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure to protect these 2 instances or you can rely on the Veeam Agents to protect them. I think the main question is where do you want to store those backups? Should they go back to the on-prem repository or would it be good to have a copy in Azure Blob first (faster recovery) and then a copy to on-prem?
If you have VBR deployed and combine it with VB for Azure, you can achieve the later by creating a policy in VB for Azure and then using backup copy jobs available in VBR to make the copy on-prem.

Thanks very much for the reply. I like the idea of backing up to Azure blob. But I now need to see how this will work with the rental VCSP model. This is the first one we have done and I need to do a little research on that.
Again, Thank you!!

We're in a similar situation. Most of our estate is VMs on-prem being backed up to on-prem then Azure object storage. But we have some VMs in Azure now. I'd like to back these up to on-prem rather than Azure object storage to save money. Are you saying I can use VB&R to back these up to our on-prem repository by creating a new agent backup job and essentially treating these Azure VMs as if they're physical servers on-prem ? The reason I ask is that it looks like if I want to create and use an Azure Backup helper appliance then we'd have to configure this backup job to hit Azure object storage first, something we don't really want.nielsengelen wrote: ↑Jun 24, 2024 8:22 am Hi Dave,

You can use an agent but keep in mind that you will be charged with egress costs going from Azure to on-prem so it's important to do some tests and calculations to see if you can save money.

Good point. That's what I'm doing right now. Thanks.
