Multiple Backup Policies - Single VM

Post by RobMiller86 »

With the latest 5a appliance, is it possible to backup an Azure VM with multiple policies? A quick search shows that a few years ago this was not possible but I am wondering if anything has changed. While the built-in scheduling options are now pretty robust in a single policy, there are some times where you might want to an additional longterm backup to a different storage account. When trying to balance out immutability and retention time, sometimes it would be beneficial to be able to use two different policies going to two different st accts. Thanks.

Hi,

This hasn’t changed. A VM can only be backed up by 1 policy.

We do support multiple repositories in the schedule. Does this not help for your use case?

In nearly all cases, the single policy works fine. It just gets tricky with certain requests. As an example, being able to set a policy with all immutable repos so that you have something like 3 years of immutable backups, but the customer also wants to keep a backup of most things forever. Having a separate policy with nothing but monthly and yearly backups to a mutable archive account so that old backups could be deleted if desired is really the only way I could think of doing this. Other than that, I suppose we could deploy a VBR and run copy jobs.

VBR would indeed be the workaround to solve this. We'll take it in consideration for a future version but I can't promise an ETA or if we will push this change since VBR can solve it (as I don't expect all of your customers having this requirement?).
