Service and SQL Server backup
As I understand Veeam Backup for Azure can back up Azure VMs. What about other Azure resource types such as App Services, App Services (Slot) and SQL Servers?

Re: Service and SQL Server backup
Hello,
not as of today. For example for SQL, Microsoft does not offer a backup API.
Best regards,
Hannes

It would be great to understand how you use these as we are always exploring potential features to add. Any more details / info is welcome.

Re: Service and SQL Server backup
I have a customer moving about 200VMs into Azure, this will result in about Azure 120VMs with a large reduction coming from a move to managed SQL instances in Azure rather than straight VMs. They understand AAIP is closer for VM backup but there was disappointment with lack of DB services backup. Azure offers redundancy with 6x replication of the back-end SQL data- but doesn't offer more than 35 day retention. You can do manual backups to blob via SSMS scripts- but you have to disable encryption which MS does not recommend. EU sees huge need for 3rd part vendor to put out this SQL data for longer term archival and vendor redundancy.

Re: Service and SQL Server backup
Robert,
We are aware of the need, many customers want this. However, as Niels stated, there are no backup API's at the moment but MSFT is aware of our ask. We might consider building something like our competition is doing, but that will not be a really scalable solution. But if this is the only option, we might need to consider it doing it

Re: Service and SQL Server backup
we have also the need to backup azure sql as a service ("MSSQL" and Postgre SQL). At the moment, we have only about 50 Databases with about 20GB of data. I checked all the Scripts etc. but i don't find it a realiable and "easy" solution. I don't know if i'm allowed to post links to other backup sw, but found a cheap and easy solution for Azure SQL Databases to backup and Restore. (And it is just for this, it does not offer other backups like vm, etc) I guess i'll implement this solution until veeam has a solution for the need. you can PM me if you like to know the vendor.

Re: Service and SQL Server backup
Are there any workarounds to get this into Veeam or do we have to rely on 3rd party for now?

Re: Service and SQL Server backup
Hi Danny, VBA doesn't offer this feature at this point in time. A 3rd party solution would be the option for now which you can store in an instance and then protect using VBA.

Re: Service and SQL Server backup
I use a third party solution. the problem there is, that it does "backup" the db as a BACPAC file. (i guess this is the "only" Method because there is no official Backup API). But some DBs do have entries which are not compatible with BACPAC export and in that case, those tools are not able to Backup the Azure SQL DB... So i really hope there will be a real Solution soon from Veeam (and a corresponding Backup API from MS)

Re: Service and SQL Server backup
Hi Abel, VB for Azure v2 has support for scripts so you can use a script that calls native tools for application consistency.
