Snapshots left at tenants subscription

Post by ks.any.cloud »

Hi Guys

When using the VBA, it leaves files(snapshots) at the tenants Azure subscription, efter it has run the policy, this is not a good solution.
The customer is faced with a-lot of files they should not be bothered with, and it consumes storage which the customer show not be invoiced.

The way that we are using the product, are that the customer should not have any access to the backup, we pull the data from the customers subscription, and has everything stored at a subscription on our(Service provider's) end.
The customer pays others to handle it, so when leaving snapshots there, it could potentially leave a lot of them, and this annoys/confuses the tenants.

Would it be possible to remove them all once the snapshot and backup is done, so they are only there/visible during the run of jobs ?

Hello,
That is exactly how the product should work, you can find more documentation about how it works here: That auxiliary Snapshot is there to help to calculate CBT and to trigger Incrementals properly, by the way, it should be just one if the policy looks like this:

I would ask internally to see if for Service Providers is something planned to as you said, a host that snapshot somewhere else, but I doubt it as this is how Azure works.

Let me come back to you, thanks!

Hi Kim,

We require 1 snapshot for CBT purposes. If this is set to 0, it would mean a full read of data every day which could be more costly. You only need to set the snapshots to keep to 1 for the daily retention, weekly and monthly can be 0. As you state it leaves a lot of snapshots, could you tell us what the current policy retention settings look like? Or do they have a lot of virtual machines with just 1 snapshot?

We may change this in the future but there are no plans to change this in the current version for now.

Hi Guys

The tenant got several vm's, so as you cloud imagine they also have alot of shapshots. And yes, it is set to only 1 and 0 if possible.
I would really like if this could be changed to be located at the service provider subscription.

We are using our own subscription to pull all data to us, all backups, the VBA appliance etc. should be located in our environment, both due to the product, the segregation and the whole way os securing that the tenant can be infected without compromising even a little part of the secured data. Also to keep the cost 100% away from the tenant, so we are in full control.

The customer. we talked with thinks these snapshots are a mess, and would like not to see them at all.
Would it be possible to prioritise this change ?

Bogdan Ili told me to create this post, so you guys were aware of the "issue".

We will look into it for sure but it's not a minor change that is easy to implement. As soon as we have an update, I'll update the topic as well.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I'm curious as to whether weekly and monthly snapshot retention is ok to be set at 0 as mentioned in an earlier post? I have a daily schedule configured to retain 1 snapshot and a weekly configured to retain 0 snapshots but the cost estimator gives me this warning:
https://ibb.co/mCgVgKj

As soon as I change the weekly schedule to keep 1 snapshot the warning disappears.
