General Questions

Post by Bryanr »

In this release is there no support for SQL backups running inside an Azure VM? Seems like this solution allows for file level restore through downloading a zip, but that is the extent of guest level restores (restoring subset of data to original VM).

Also with this file level recovery is there a restore size limitation? Azure's current solution is to mount the source disks via iSCSI to allow you to copy data off, but they put up a disclaimer that it is not necessarily stable past 10GB in size.

Does this provide better support for storage spaces? This is where Azure Backup Is not good. If you want to do a file level restore you must mount all disks to a different VM, bring the storage space online then copy data across to the original VM. Is file level recovery easier with this Veeam solution when VMs are using storage spaces?

Does this also allow for quick restores like Azure does by maintaining most recent backup in snap shot form? I see snapshot as an option but it's not clear if this meets current Azure Backup RTOs.

Lastly what is the story around cross region restores, Azure Backup allows you to restore to a secondary region, when your vault is geo redundant, from data source in secondary region. If we use ra-grs storage is this possible with Veeam appliance in secondary region pointing to same storage account?

Really trying to understand the value add here as Azure Backup has added some pretty useful features in recent times. Perhaps cost is mentioned with cool storage, and lower RPOs as we can backup more than once per day.

Many questions, exciting to see some native integration. Look forward to learning more about the ins and outs of the product and continuing to review the docs.

Hi,

I will add some numbers to your questions to make it easier.

1) There is no application integration in this version, so for now no integration with SQL. would be interesting to know if you are only using MSSQL or also other databases?
2) Our File-Level Recovery runs on a worker machine and has no file size limitations for downloads.
3) You should be able to restore files from these by using the built-in FLR solution.
4) You can use Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure for snapshot management and/or backups to blob storage. This allows you to do a quick recovery to that specific point in time to achieve your RTO.
5) When talking about cross-region restores are you talking about full virtual machine restores or also file level restores?

On the virtual machine restore level, we offer:
- Restore the virtual machine to the original location or different location with potential different settings
- Restore a disk to the original location or different location with potential different settings

We offer a free version (up to 10 virtual machines) and a 30 day trial so give it a spin and looking forward to hear your feedback!

1) We are using MS SQL Server
5) I would be looking for full VM cross region restore, essentially source region is down completely, can I restore to a secondary region in some manner if we plan accordingly (maybe having an appliance in a secondary region and using a geo redundant storage account?)

I am also interested in the answer to recovering from a region down scenario. Testing shows the snapshots can only be made local to the VM in the same region. So the only choice here is to run the file backups to another region or use GRS native in Azure? How does that integrate with the Veeam appliance?

Hey guys,
When a region is down, you won't be able to use the snapshots to restore. However, restoring from the Veeam backup format, if those are stored on a storage account in a different region can be used.

Hi all,

As an update to this topic. With the release of v2, we now provide the ability to use pre- and post-scripts for application consistency.
