Feature Request - Add multiple orgs with same server name

Post by Cullan » Jan 23, 2018 10:58 pm

Hi There,

While it's easy to add multiple different orgs for 365 it's not possible to add multiple different orgs that use the same on-prem exchange since the organisation name is taken from the server name and the server name is the same for all orgs in that environment.
It would be good to be able to choose a custom organisation name and keep the server name seperate.

Quote from case # 02473762
Please see our SE response as below:

I'd consider this a feature request, and encourage to create a new post in the VBO365 forum

Here is an example I could come up with, just so that it's really clear:
Mail server: mail.server.co.nz has 10 mailboxes in 3 organizations:
- user1@site1.co.nz
- user2@site1.co.nz
- admin@site1.co.nz -> Admin user can access everything site1.co.nz
- user1@companya.co.nz
- president@companya.co.nz
- admin@companya.co.nz -> Admin user can access everything companya.co.nz
- homer@simpsons.co.nz
- bart@simpsons.co.nz
- marge@simpsons.co.nz
- lisa@simpsons.co.nz -> Admin user can access everything simpsons.co.nz

You'd like to add 3 organizations: site1.co.nz, companya.co.nz, simpsons.co.nz
Right now you would see 3 organizations named "mail.server.co.nz"
I'd imagine that it wouldn't be all that difficult a change, as we essentially do this for the Exchange Online mailboxes.
Hopefully that makes sense?

Thanks,
Cullan

Cullan,

If I understand this correctly, you have 1 exchange server but it hosts 3 different organizations. Is that correct?
So at this moment, you can add the organization once, and you see all the mailboxes (of all organizations) in the same wizard. Correct?

Hi Mike,

Thats it. It's a multi tenant exchange server.
The main feature we would like to see in VBO365 is to be able to name the organisations something other than the on-prem server name to avoid the conflict. We are currently investigating the exchange role scoping to limit the mailboxes a tenant admin user can access but that's really a MS problem for us to work out rather than Veeam.

Thanks
Cullan

Thanks Cullan,
A solution today would be to create 3 repositories (either on the same server, different proxies) and create 3 jobs where each job contains the users from a specific tenant. Through search in the wizard you can search on the domain name and then select them.

For your request itself, to be honest, I would need to investigate how a multi-tenant exchange exactly works and how to add it 3 times as a different organization. I don't know how that exactly works

Absolutely. I guess we are not after a solution right now but it would be good to see if it could be possible in the future.
We have a lot of clients running on our own exchange platform that we could start offering VBO.

It's essentially a multitenant AD and Exchange environment with organisations being segregated via OUs and limiting permissions on the GAL. I'm sure there will be a way we can scope the exchange role view-only recipient permissions so the admin users can only resolve users in their own GAL/OU. I think the only thing we would really need from Veeam is the ability to add an organisation in to VBO using a 'Organisation Name' and 'Server Name' rather then just a server name.
Splitting the VBO repositories out is easy enough.

Thanks
Cullan
