Just adding my interest to this thread - we've begun to push O365 backup now that 1.5 is multi-tenant - the most asked question from potential clients is can it do Sharepoint and One drive too.

Stephen,

We announced at VeeamON (you can check the keynotes) that we will deliver both (OneDrive for Business and SharePoint online) in version 2. But since we are in the begin stage of this functionality, any specifics or wishes are still welcome. Not saying or promising anything, but we will look into every functionality request

Just wanted to drop my 2¢ regarding SharePoint backups with Veeam.

1. I want to be able to backup entire SharePoint sites, documents, and libraries.
2. I want to be able to backup OneDrive for Business.
3. I want to store these backups on-prem or in a hosted cloud area.

Thanks!

Hi Robert,

1 and 2 we have announced already for version 2.

For 3, you will be able to use a VCSP (version 1.5 will be multi-tenant so they can start offering this) or you can host the solution yourself in Azure or similar

Cheers

Hi there

any idea when version 2 will be released?
We are an existing Veem customer and have got at testperiod for 1 year for O365 mail backup.
But now we have clients that use both OneDrive for Business, Sharepoint online and MS Teams and we are in need of a backup solution.
Any idea when Sharepoint, OneDrive and MS Teams backup will be released?

Best regards

Hi Svein,

First: Welcome to the forums. We expect version 2 somewhere around Q1 2018. It will indeed have protection for SharePoint Online, OneDrive for Business but Teams won't be included yet for now. We are investigating teams already but I can't tell when that will be included. For our interest, what exactly are you willing to protect that is in teams? Attachments? Chats? OneNote...

Hi Svein,

Understood. As said, teams won't be included yet but I am looking into this heavily (I use teams also and MSFT is making it bigger and bigger every week so...). The way you like to restore it is valuable for our knowledge.

Thanks
Mike

+1 for SharePoint and OneDrive backups. Veeam would be a preference when advising customers of a SharePoint Online backup solution.

+1 for Sharepoint and OneDrive backup. Very Glad that those two features are coming out in the Version 2 which according to Veeam Representative is expected in the Q1 of 2018. Thumbs up Veeam Team :D

Hi Vladimir and Matthew,

First: Welcome to both of you on the forums!
Second: At Veeam we believe in: It is ready when it is ready and not point a target date on it. We prefer to deliver a solution that works instead ;-)

Dynamics is not really part of the O365 suite and is rather on its own (although there are synergies between the two). As of this moment we don't have any plans to protect this data. Just out of curiosity. Besides backup and restore back to the service, what else would you expect from Veeam for such a service?

Good Day

We're currently start working with the O365 Suite from MS. We are already using Veeam for MS O365 to Backup Exchange Online. Now starting with using Sharepoint Online / Teams etc.
Following Questions for Version 2 of this Agent:

For Sharepoint we need to be able to Backup / Restore at least:
- Sites
- Documents
- Lists
- Pages
-> Is that with Version 2 possible?

I guess there will be a container like .vbk file created for sharepoint Conent?

Restore:
- Is it possible to restore/export Sharepoint "lists" from a Veeam backup to a csv file?
- Is it possible to script restore operations for example with powershell for disaster purposes?

Release Date:
(Would be great to have answers about those questions so that we can decide if we need a workarround until V2 is released)
- Is there Release still planned for Q1 or later?
- Will there be a Beta Programm for V2? If yes in which time frame and is it possible join this beta programm?

Thanks
Best Regards
André

Hi Andre,

It will indeed be possible to backup sites/ documents lists and pages with version 2.0. Functionality will be more or less similar than what you can do today with a virtual SharePoint on-premises (look at our current functionality in Veeam Explorer for SharePoint to see what you can restore today).

We won't generate it in a VBK version however. Since the way backup works in VBO for Exchange Online is different than our traditional VBR product, backup of SharePoint (and storing the data) will be different also.

So restore of lists to a CSV file won't be possible today and that won't be in the next version either. PowerShell restores however will be possible.

For the release date. It is ready when it is ready :-). On a serious note, I can't give you a release date at this moment (and we never do at Veeam) but Beta is getting closer. (So yes, there will be a beta program)

Brgds,
Mike

Hi Rasmus,

We are in the stage of technical preview and are testing now so we can make a beta available (private beta, SE-led). I can't give any date yet but things are looking ok.

Cheers

Hi Veeam,

The first item in this thread is 20 months ago, August 2016! So long we are waiting now for these features. Q1 2018 is over in 2 weeks, till when is it going to be postponed this time?
We had the case recently where a colleague lost more than 1000 OneDrive files because she noticed to late the files were gone, so the retention period was past. I can only ask once more: please make it a priority!

Thanks

My Director has asked me to look at other Office 365 backup solutions while the Veeam folks work on their solution. We really need this. We're focused on the ability to backup and restore Sharepoint, Onedrive, and Teams. I don't want to leave Veeam.

Brandon,

I can't do magic and give you something which is not ready. I am still looking at end of Q2 for the GA version and a more open beta somewhere in between. There is a technical preview at this point in time but to support those tests, we keep it limited so people can be helped when there is an issue.

If it is really urgent, I suggest you talk to your SE about it

Hope it helps

What would help us in our discussions with customers is how v2 will differentiate from the competition? What would be good reasons to wait? Can you share some insights?

Joeri,

The major topic is obviously SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business support. It is not differentiating from the competition as most of them already have this support. What we also are going to bring is lots more flexibility for the user to create jobs. As a quick example, I am not going to go into depth, you will be able to select a user and then decide to process mail only/ archive only/ Onedrive only or any combination. We will also support hybrid environments meaning that you can protect SharePoint Online but also SharePoint on-premises. And the biggest differentiator will be our known Veeam Explorers. You probably already know the Veeam Explorer for SharePoint and we will have a new one called (tentative) Veeam Explorer for OneDrive for Businnes

So in true Veeam tradition the emphasis is on fast recovery and user experience.

You should really considering dropping or replacing the word Backup in the product name! :)
