Veeam Backup 365 as a migration tool?

Post by frankive » Dec 13, 2016 1:38 pm

Hi.
I wonder if someone else has tried to used Veeam Backup 365 as a migration tools to Office 365 from on-premise exchange?
I have used the 365 migration tool (staged migration) but that is all in with all mailboxes.
Also tried Dell On Demand Migration which is superb, but though with a cost.

Frank,

There is actually a way of restoring a backup of exchange on-prem to O365. You can use our Veeam explorer for Exchange to restore to Office 365. While it is not directly a visible option in the explorer, it is possible by adding the right mailbox / user/password (needs to be a user with impersonation rights I believe) and then the O365 "CAS server" (I believe this is outlook.office365.com and then a DNS with geo information will reroute you to the closest one)

It was actually quite straigt forward :)
I startet a "windows guest restore" of our exchangeserver so we had the .edg and log files from our exchange avaiable from c:\veeamflr
Then we add an Office 365 tenant, add store and chose Exchange and the .edb and .log files.
Marked the content we wanted to restarte and the mailbox and as typed in outlook.office365.com
All worked straight forward. :)

Excellent!

Though since the .edb will get a lock I can just do 1 mailbox at time. Not very good for larger SMBs, but still a pretty neat way o do simeple migrations an evening for a small SMB.
