SMB3 Support Timeline

Post by RobTreweek »

Hello!

The user guide and release notes for version 2.0 says "SMB 3.0 share (experimental support)".

Is there any indication when SMB 3.0 shares will be fully supported?

Many thanks in advance.

Hi Rob and welcome to the community!

There're certain internal reasons to keep this "experimental" note in the documentation; however, you're absolutely safe to use SMB 3.0 for VBO repositories, and you will receive technical support from Veeam for such deployment if it's needed.

Thanks!

Sorry Polina, in addition the release notes state..
Storage volumes hosting the archive repository must be formatted with NTFS or ReFS
I assume there are reasons behind this and thus why I wouldn't be able to utilise a SAMBA share from a Linux host acting as a NAS.

Hi Rob,

We have not tested such configuration, and to be honest I'm not sure if it's going to work.
If you have a chance to try it though, please do share the results, as it might be useful for other peers as well.

Thanks!

Hi,

We tried using SMB3 shares over SAMBA for this from two different hosts but every time after running smoothly for about one month the backups start failing. I don't remember the exact error but Veeam says unable to read/write or something like that. We changed the repo to a local Windows drive (NTFS) and after that it has been working. Just a heads up.

Regards,
Mattias

Mattias, thank you for the heads up and welcome to the community!

Do you have any logs collected after the backup failed on SAMBA?

Unfortunately I didn't collect logs when that happened. I will probably give it a try again as that setup would be more convenient for us, I will let you now (or open a support case) when I do.
