Veeam Office 365 performance issue

Post by Elefanten2 »

Hi,
We are seeing some performance issue with our Veeam Office365 backup.

Info :
500Mbit internet line (Fiber)
Backup server : 128GB mem, 18 Cores
Storage is an attached HP DAS unit (new) to our backup server on Raid 6, no SSD.
Copying files to the HP DAS unit yields 150-200MB write.
Have created 10 auxiliary backup accounts as well to us to avoid throttling.

I have created 3 jobs :
1 Exchange
2 Onedrive
3 Sites

Exchange Fluctuates between Source/Target for bottleneck and Processing rate is steady on 2.5MB/sec
Read rate 1.9MB/sec
Write rate 2.0 - 2.2 MB/sec

Sites fluctuates between Source/Target for bottleneck and Processing rate is between 150 - 500kb
Read rate 1.5MB/sec
Write rate 50-500 kb/sec

I have changed threads in Office365 proxy from 64 to 10, do this take effect immediatly ?

In those jobs, does it mean you have:
1 mailbox (Exchange)
2 OneDrive accounts
3 SharePoint sites

We advise to back up multiple accounts (Exchange) at once. Also, Exchange throttling is different compared to SharePoint/OneDrive. If you are only backing up 1 by 1, the speed you are seeing can be normal as you are probably hitting the throttling limit for Exchange.

Hi nielsengelen,

1 mailbox (Exchange)
2 OneDrive accounts
3 SharePoint sites

That is correct, i checked OneDrive account and it gets sometimes up to 25MB/sec Processing and write 52MB/sec so i am happy with that :)

When testing how many threads to use in proxy ? Currently set to 20.
Does it take effect immediatly after i adjust it ?

It depends on the size of your environment, the default 64 is normally fine. It takes effect on the next job run. We have a best practice guide available with more information on sizing for backups.
