64-bit veeam version?

Hi,

The Veeam Backup FAQ says that 64-bit doesn't offer any advantage. Any idea why?

It seems to me that 64-bit should be advantageous in terms of amount of RAM allowed on the server, and RAM per process.

Hi David, no Veeam Backup & Replication process uses more than 400-500 MB of RAM, so 2 GB limit of 32-bit process is plenty. Thanks.

But with a 64 version, expecially in proxies, you can run more cuncurrent jobs, right?

Yes, of course 64-bit Windows OS versions can address much more RAM, and thus run much more processes because of that.
But this is a benefit of having 64-bit Windows OS version, while the topic is about benefits of having 64-bit Veeam version.

Obviously I take advantage of 64 bit if I both Windows and Veeam, it would sound silly to me to install for example 32-bit Veeam on a 64-bit Windows.

Even though it may sound silly from common sense, installing 64-bit Veeam in this case does not provide any advantages whatsoever over installing 32-bit Veeam in this case (with 64-bit OS), and that's the point I am trying to make here. The only thing you get is 64-bit UI and manager processes, while the main engine is still going to be 32-bit process. With the reason being that there is no 64-bit VDDK bits for Windows currently...

Obviously, having 64-bit UI process adds no value. And I will say more, 64-bit processes actually have some issues that 32-bit processed do not have. This has to deal with higher memory consumption, you can find some recent complaints on forums regarding that. This is caused by .NET Framework bug affecting 64-bit processes only. But of course, this is not too big of a deal with 64-bit Windows OS because it can address much more physical RAM.

Ok, got your point, thanks for explanation.
Never had any real problem running 64 bit versions with ram, but I've never been too conservative on VM sizing when going with virtual appliance mode in order to see any problem.

This is what made us start investigating RAM usage of the manager process.
And my initial suggest appeared incorrect, the cache takes very little memory.
