When I try to add a virtual server I get the following message:
A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond

I then turn off the firewall and I get the following error:
Unknown host type 'ws'

Any ideas?

I just checked the case and saw that logfiles are missing. Support can only help if you upload logs https://www.veeam.com/kb1832

just a few guesses
1) if you add a ESXi host, the user name is root
2) if you add a vCenter, then the username is admin@vsphere.local per default
3) firewall issues

For further investigations, please continue with support. Guessing on that issue makes little sense.

Found my issue. I'm using VMWare Workstation Pro. So I need to use an agent.

ah, now the host type "ws" makes sense

yes, agents are the way to go for VMware workstation.
