Are gifted licenses (VUL's) no longer lost on when merging

Post by tombpcnpa »

We are a small customer with two installed copies of Essentials Enterprise - one at each of our sites. Each has 6 gifted VUL's. We backup under 30 servers on our primary site and a couple at the other.
I am looking at possibly moving to full VUL licensing rather than socket based and wanted to get a current statement on whether or not the 12 gifted VUL's will be lost if I switch.

I know that originally they would be lost , but a post from last year suggest that may no longer be the case. Can anyone clarify the situation for me before I look at the costings please ?

Thanks,
Tom

Hello,
two installed copies of Essentials Enterprise
where does the central license management happen then? Enterprise Manager?
Each has 6 gifted VUL's
how did you manage to purchase more than 6 sockets in total for the Essentials version? I remember six sockets maximum at Veeam (that's different to VMware Essentials where I remember it's possible to buy more packages)

The quote is for customers with sockets + VUL. It's not for migrations from sockets to VUL. Please remember this this is R&D forums. Licensing is something to talk with your Veeam sales rep / Veeam renewal team / reseller.

Best regards,
Hannes

We have two separate installations, each with their own management interface. One if at our main site and the other at our DR site. Both were originally purchased as Essentials.
A few years ago there was a promotion to upgrade your version of Essentials to Essentials Enterprise so I took that for each one.

I appreciate your time to respond and understand that this isn't the ideal place for answers, but given that Anton's post seemed to suggest a change in the use of gifted VUL's, I though I may be able to get a hard and fast answer from a member staff.

Anton's statement above does not apply to your scenario - moving from socket essentials to VUL.

Kindly, discuss further questions or potential offerings with your sales representative.

Thanks!

@tombpcnpa the gifted instances are a feature of Socket licenses, so if you part with a Socket license then you won't have gifted instances. However, when migrating to VUL you should also keep in mind that VUL usage can be exceeded permanently which effectively gives you even more extra instances for free.

Many thanks for clearing that up for me. It will make it easier to decide whether to stay with socket-based, or move to VUL's.
