Automatic inclusion of new vm's in backupjob

Post by mst1966 »

Hi forum,

we have a customer asking if it is possible to set up so that new vm's (vmware) automatically is included in a backupjob?

They create a lot of vm's and wants to be sure that they are backed up even if they by chance should forget forget to include some of them!

There are multiple ways to do this.

I use VM folders as the object in most of my Veeam jobs. When I add a VM to the infrastructure I put it in the folder I want it backed up with and it gets backed up on the next run.

I backup by datastore, all VMs in a datastore get backed up. Use tags to exclude VMs you don't want. We set datastores up by RPO/RTO that way if a VM is placed in the right data store everything is automatic with RTO/RPT and DR.

To summarize it: any container object within vSphere can be used in a backup job which would then automate VM selection. And to add to Larry's point on vSphere tags, those can be used easily for VM selection or for VM exclusion.

yeah, I'd be tempted to go with tags

only thing to be aware is you can't combine tags (a common feature requests)
