AWS EC2 restore fails to identify windows boot disk if more than one disk present
Hi
Case number 07050689
Using the latest version 12.1 I am trying to restore a backup of a server2022 VM to AWS EC2.
That is I am using the "Restore to Amazon EC2" option
I can successful do this if the VM has just one disk, the boot disk only
If I try the same on the same VM and include both the boot disk and the second data disk I receive the error message
Error Importing VM Error: Failed to import machine to Amazon EC2: ClientError: Windows Installation not found
I was wondering if anyone else has done a server2022 VM to AWS restore on a VM that has additional disks to the boot disk
Note: I have successfully restored multi disk server2016 server before
Thanks

Re: AWS EC2 restore fails to identify windows boot disk if more than one disk present
Hi clcuser
I'm not aware of such limitation.
But I heard of issues regarding the partition layout in server 2022. There was a case 1 month ago where the restore didn't worked when a specific order of the windows default partitions was used. I will ask your support engineer to check your case with the case of the customer.
Best,
Fabian

Re: AWS EC2 restore fails to identify windows boot disk if more than one disk present
Hi
Veeam R and D has confirmed restoring a server2022 VM that has 2 or more disks using the "Restore to Amazon EC2 option" may fail as indicated above.
There is no timeline for fixing the issue but Veeam is working on the problem with help from AWS.
I'll keep you posted.
Thanks

Re: AWS EC2 restore fails to identify windows boot disk if more than one disk present
Just an update.
AWS reviewed the failed import attempts and noted that when two disks are imported the device names are labelled as /dev/sde and /dev/sdf and not /dev/sda1 /dev/sde and this is the cause of the ClientError: Windows Installation not found" error message.
It is unclear what is causing the disks to be mis-labelled. Both AWS and Veeam are still investigating.

AWS have informed me that a new version import/export utility is under test to fix the issue.
No idea yet when it will hit the streets but progress has been made.

Hi
AWS have now pushed out a fix to production.
I tested a restore of server2022 with multiple disks and it restored correctly in AWS
