Backing up a Synology NAS share
Hi
I can see that this subject is not new, but i can't seem to find a definite answer to if there is any way of backing up a Synology NAS with Veeam? using it as a linux repository seems fine, but the ability to backup NAS Shares i guess is still not finished? I have a customer that's using a HA cluster with synologys and i would like to use the veeam as the backup solution for this as well as the rest of the servers if possible in any way.
If this is not yet possible, any idea when the nas share backup will be available? before end of Q2 this year? next year ?
would be grateful for some insight here.

Re: Backing up a Synology NAS share
Hello,
This capability should be shipped before the end of this year.
As a workaround, many of our customers are currently using File to Tape jobs. These don't have to go to the actual tape device, as VTL is also supported.
Thanks!

Ok thanks, I Will look into where that option takes the backup setup until the option is supported in other methods.
Thanks for fast reply

Re: Backing up a Synology NAS share
I am also looking to do this. How do I setup the File to tape job without a Tape device?

Re: Backing up a Synology NAS share
You need to deploy Virtual Tape Library first (application that allows to convert disk space into "virtual" tapes). Then, create files to tape job and point it to the VTL. Thanks!

Re: Backing up a Synology NAS share
I successfully constructed and tested this in my lab with a NetApp 9.5 ONTAP sim native CIFS share backing up to a Starwind VTL (FREE) running on a Windows 2012 R2 VM. Works well for my demo need. YRMV I suppose for production but it's easy to get along with at least.

Re: Backing up a Synology NAS share
Couldn't get it to work as it is an old Windows 2008 r2 Server, was getting an error from Powershell creating the image file. Will reinvestigate after the server works are complete, would love to keep Veeam in the mix and not have to rely solely on Synology Hyper Backup.

Re: Backing up a Synology NAS share
idea: 1) build new server vm 2) clone backend disk and attach to new VM 3) cutover to new VM
keep the veeam.
keep the veeam.

Is there any estimate on when this year this will be available?

Hi Danny, cannot really give any more precise ETA than the "before the end of this year" mentioned above. If you want to participate in the private beta, please contact your local Veeam sales rep and check if they have any available opportunities.

Re: Backing up a Synology NAS share
Hi folks,
Mind me asking to share the information about the NAS you would like to protect with Veeam B&R (vendor & model)? This information will help our QA department to design additional performance tests around the most commonly used hardware confirmations, so any input is highly appropriated. Cheers!

Re: Backing up a Synology NAS share
Hi
My company primarily uses the NAS drives as a backup repository but I have recently taken over the IT for a few companies which use them as the shared area - 10TB plus
Models that they have are:
DS215
DS216
DS916
RS815RP

Re: Backing up a Synology NAS share
I'd like to see this feature added soon as well. We use several Synology NASs in our environment, and it would be nice to back them up.

Re: Backing up a Synology NAS share
really need this functionality. DS218+ RS3614xs+, etc. type shouldn't matter as they are mostly SMB shares
I would love the ability to use a Shared Folder or even a subfolder on the NAS as a backup source. some of the backup solutions on the NAS are lacking for sub-folders and I am a Veeamer for life
I would hope using a SMB share as a source shouldn't be too difficult to implement? we've heard this is coming in 2019 for a while. ty!
example:
I want to back up this folder on my Synology NAS: \\192.168.1.999\Documents\Critical to a Repository I setup on my Windows Server. if I provide the username/pw for access to the share on the Synology...you'd think it would work the same way as using the Synology as a backup destination (which works perfectly fine currently)

We want this feature too. We have 3 Synology NAS, which we want to back up by Veeam B & R.

Looking for this as well. If this capability is going to be added by the end of the year as suggested by Gostev, there isn't much time left.

Re: Backing up a Synology NAS share
I'm looking for this functionality as well. If there's not been an official announcement by this point, it seems increasingly unlikely that we'll see this before the end of the year.

Re: Backing up a Synology NAS share
Happy to say we have made the first release candidate build available internally yesterday, which means we're just a few weeks away from shipping the final code now.
