Backup and restore of Exchange 2013

Post by marky »

I'm looking into the backup and restore of our Exchange 2013 VM which was very simple using BE2010R3, since these were performed direct to/from Tape.

Our new setup is a dedicated physical Veaam Server, so our intention is to backup the VM direct to our Veeam Server and then backup the VM's to Tape (this also need to work for out DR process)

I've performed a backup of our Exchange VM but my question relates to how to restore single mailbox items from the VM backup or whether I'm going about this the wrong way.

I see I can use the Explorer to browse Exchange Backups and select a store, but this doesn't help if I want to refer to VM backups so any overview/pointers would help so I can decide the best process for us going forward.

Thanks

Hi Mark,

If you had application-aware image processing enabled, then you can navigate to VM backup and select Restore Exchange Items from the menu. Have you tried to do that?

Thanks!

I didn't so I'll enable it and run the backup again.

To make sure your Exchange is in a consistent state you DO really want to enable this feature. Please look through our sticky F.A.Q. for more details in application-aware image processing. Also I wanted to clarify that even if you don't have this option enabled, you still can perform Exchange Item restores. To do that, you need to start FLR session manually and then browse to your Exchange databases to use VEX.

I attempted selecting the option Restore > VMware > application items > Exchange but was a little hesitant because there weren't many options, it's not that intuitive!

I looked at this page http://www.veeam.com/microsoft-exchange-recovery.html but the demo video it so small you cannot really see what is going on.

Is there a specific sticky about restoring Exchange items because I don't want to be clicking next/finish without first understanding the process?

EDIT - found this - very useful http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FeDUff84RoU

Wouldn't the corresponding user guide section be helpful?

I'm receiving a credentials error when I select restore to username@domain so the first thing I checked was the ESE area in options and 2010 is marked as configured.

I've tried setting my mailbox as full permission for the veeam and administrator account with no luck

Sorted, it was the full permission mailbox setting, must have been a little impatient.
