Backup Chains
Hi,
I have a question regarding backup chains.
Is Veeam creating one backup chain for each VM or has each VM multiple backup chains, one for each backup job?
Or put differently, is it possible to have one backup job creating incremental backup (e.g. on weekdays) and another job creating synthetic full backups of these incremental backups (on the weekend)?
Regards,
Johannes

Re: Backup Chains
Johannes, for each job (whether it consists of a single or multiple VMs) a single backup chain is created.
May I ask what is your concern regarding this, why do you need separate backup chains?

Re: Backup Chains
I was hoping that all jobs share the same backup chain. In that case I could create incremental backups with one job and synthetic full backup with another job (and get more flexible scheduling this way).foggy wrote:Johannes, for each job (whether it consists of a single or multiple VMs) a single backup chain is created.

Re: Backup Chains
Not sure I understand the scenario. You can schedule each job independently in the way you need it, making incremental or synthetic fulls when required for each of them.

Re: Backup Chains
Can you schedule a job for 7 pm on weekdays and 7 am on weekends e.g.?

Re: Backup Chains
Please review this existing topic for the possible solution > Separate Scheduling for Daily Incremental and Weekly Ful
Also take into account retention policy here as well, each job has its own one. If you target different jobs to the same backup chain, there could be different conflicts in terms of how many restore points to keep etc.

Re: Backup Chains
Thanks a lot. That explains most of my question.
But how could you target different jobs on the same chain? I can't find any reference to that.

It was just "if" , you cannot do that.
