backup copy hardened repository
Good morning here is my project, I would like to use a physical server with RHEL 8.2 on board as a second backup repository.
source data= 15 TB
number of virtual machines = 80
restore point= 21
backup copy job with GFS 1 week
change rate = 10%
data left after reduction = 50%
Reflink" (Fast Clone in Veeam) functionality with the XFS file system
I have some doubts that I would like to understand:
If I want to protect my 21 restore points, do I have to set immutability at 21 days ?
by activating this policy backup copy job with GFS 1 week does this mean that apart from the first full one, I have another 3 full backups? are they active full or synthetic full backup?
I'm not sure about the size of the disk space for the repository, I did the calculation with two different tools, in your opinion 'is the space correct for 35 tb?
thank !!!

Re: backup copy hardened repository
Hello,
yep, 4 full backups in total. per default synthetic full except you configured active full. 35 TB looks good, yes
Best regards,
Hannes
that depends on how often you run a backup. normally it's easier to set the retention in days instead of restore points. then it's clear how to match the two values. If I want to protect my 21 restore points, do I have to set immutability at 21 days ?

Re: backup copy hardened repository
I didn't understand when you say full except you configured active full, where do you decide if it's a synthetic or active full backup?
you decide that in the backup job and not in the backup copy job, right?
thank

Re: backup copy hardened repository
ah sorry, I linked the user guide section for backup jobs instead of backup copy job. "active full backup copy job" means the "Read the entire restore point from source instead of synthesizing it from increments ."

Re: backup copy hardened repository
the difference between the two type full backup is clear to me , my question was another, in the backup copy job you can't directly configure the backup type(synthetic o active full) full in GFS , takes the settings from the backup job.

Re: backup copy hardened repository
correct. backup type (active / synthetic) is configured in the backup job. backup copy type (active / synthetic) is configured on the backup copy job. The two jobs are independent from each other and types can be mixed.in the backup copy job you can't directly configure the backup type
For space savings, synthetic is always required.
