Backup Copy Job Compression

Post by FrediWeber »

Hi

I've created a backup copy job from a HP StoreOnce to a Linux server.
In this Copy Job I enabled compression and deduplication and set the comp ratio to high.
On the target repo I set the option to decompress the data before storing to disk.
The Copy Job works but it does not compress or dedupe anything. Is this expected?

Thank you.

Do you mean the amount of transferred data in the job stats equals to the amount of read data?

Yes exactly.
When I copy to a SMB Target the compression works as expected.

How you repositories are set up (type, gateways, if any, etc.)?

Backup Job:

SAN --> Backup Proxy --> StoreOnce

CopyJob:

StoreOnce --> Backup Proxy --> Linux Server

There are no Gateways around.

What type of repository was used to add StoreOnce and Linux Server to Veeam B&R console?

I'd expect no compression in case of to CIFS target, since in this case both source and target data movers would be running on the backup server. What you're describing looks unexpected, so I recommend contacting support to take a look at the logs, they will clearly tell whether compression is used.

That said, I'd also note that the entire setup is against our recommendations to have deduplication enabled on a secondary storage, while having a primary storage that stores raw data. More details here.
